And we’re back from P. Carey, Selangor! It was another hot, hot day as the Mah Meri confirmed it barely rained in their village over the past month. And such hot & dry weather made pandanus weaving too taxing as the pandanus strips became too brittle. Hence, we only picked up half a bag of assorted crafts!

The only good use for such sunny days is charging solar lamps like this one donated to Gendoi Pe’ah (70s) of the Sg Mata hamlet. This mini unit (seen at bottom left) is useful for elders who only need to light up their small homes. Each cost RM65 though via our matching grants scheme, artisans only pay an affordable RM30 to replace their kerosene lamps. However this particular unit was sponsored in full by Kanta Portraits, via sales of their commissioned work. Thanks for the gift of light!

Camera #9FieldGraphic– rebuild & modification

Say hello to camera build #9fieldgraphic. I have acquired a new 'old' camera #4x5 #Graflex #CrownGraphic made in 1963 according to the serial number. It was initially designed as a hand-held press camera, relatively cheap on the used market and so many were made. This one was a beat-up old camera which I have made extensive modifications to convert it into a #fieldcamera. Full movements on the front and vertical/portrait format since I mainly only do portraiture. I'm quite proud of my handiwork! And will be starting to do some trials soon. Took me two weeks to rebuild, about a month of thinking and sketching

1963 Graflex Crown Graphic rebuild and modification. 1 package arrives from Japan. 2 The camera has a fixed landscape format on the rear, to make a portrait shot it requires the camera to be rotated (front standard movements would be very limited). 3 removed rear format plate 4 cut and position 5 glue back into frame 6 make a rear frame to fit 7 cut rear standard/ mount to fit 8 screw on new frame and standard 9 spray paint matt black (wax water proof treatment, pic not taken) 10 fit felt cloth to fix light leaks 11 front standard has limiting movement 12 some modification to achieve front low tilt 13 grinding away the rail to achieve swing 14 grinding, acquired an angle grinder, it's my new favourite tool.

We ended the night with a demonstration [12,13] portrait making session, an open air darkroom [14] and the presentation of the prints [15].
